Alappuzha also known as Alleppey is a town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons. It was described as the Venice of the East by Lord Curzon.

Alappuzha district was formed on 17th August, 1957 which is carved out of the erstwhile Kottayam and Quilon districts, and consisted initially of seven taluks, namely Cherthala, Amb Alappuzha, Kuttanad, Thiruvalla, Chengannur, Karthikappally and Mavelikkara. The name Alappuzha means the land between the sea and network of rivers flowing into it.The district is bounded on the north by Kochi and Kanayannur taluks of Ernakulam district, on the east by Vaikom, Kottayam and Changanassery taluks of Kottayam district and Thiruvalla, Kozhencherry and Adoor taluks of Pathanamthitta district, on the South by Kunnathur and Karunagappally taluks of Kollam district and on the west by Lakshadweep sea.The present Alappuzha district comprises of six taluks namely Cherthala, Amb Alappuzha, Kuttanad, Karthikappally, Chengannur and Mavelikkara.
Prime AttractionsAmbalapuzha The Sri Krishna Temple at Ambalapuzha is 14 km from Alleppey. It is famous for its palpayasam -a sweet milk porridge offered to the diety. The temple`s main festival helds in March/April. This is where the 16th century poet Kunjan Nambiar staged his first Ottan Thullal, a solo dance performance with high social content.Pathiramanal (An Island) This is a small beautiful island in the Vembanad Lake. It is accessible only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.Punnapra A short distance from Alappuzha is Punnapra, a village which is famous for heroic struggles between the communists and Travancore State Police in the Punnapra Vayalar Communist uprising of 1946.Krishnapuram Palace located at a distance of 47 kms, at Kayamkulam, on the way to Kollam is the double storeyed palace which contains one of the greatest Mural panels in Kerala.
